What The Colors Mean

When looking at the general opportunities you may notice that the opportunity colors are present in 3 different colors depending upon which opportunity you are looking at. These colors are a generalization as to the level of personal involvement that students would experiance if they choose to participate in those opportunities. Here is a comparison chart to show what each color means.

**note** some opps have multiple colors, this reflects the fact that there are multiple ways of serving that fall under this opp and they take place in the level of committment that the different colors indicate depending on which way you choose.**

Time CommitmentMinimal; generally less than once a week, and for less than 4 hours. You can miss these. More committed; generally anything that is weekly or more than 1x per week, for at least 2 hours at a time - Or, something that happends once or twice total for long periods of time i.e. 5+ hours. You cannoot miss these without explanation. Heavy committment; usually involves multiple days of continued work for long periods of time. Also, on call commitmenets where you have to be available most of the time. You cannot miss these.
Efforts InvolvedSimple work; none or minimal training required, usually physical tasks of light to medium demands and simple organizational tasks. Anyone can do these. Some skill required; service may require some brief training and probably do. Can be heavier more strenuous physical tasks that may require experiance. Can involve dealing with others in a mentor/tutor/advisor role. May require mental work more than physical. It takes some commitment to do these. Abnormal efforts; literally above and beyond what the normal student would ever do. These service opportunities can take moderate to extensive training, but the rewards are proportional*. They can involve strenuous physical work, but more commonly, extensive mental and organizational efforts. You must be truly motivated to do these.
DistanceLocal; almost always within town limits or at most in neighboring towns. Less than 30 minutes travel. Wider range; can be in town, but can also be as far away as Boston or Providence. Travel may be necesary and transportation will probably be needed. Anywhere from 10 to 10,000 miles; can range from local Big Brother Big Sister role to Amigos De Las Americas in central american countries. Don't take it lightly but don't put it out of your realm of possibility. (internships included here)

Please remember that for specific specs on commitment you must refer to the info given on the opportunities page for that service and any information given to you by the SSC or the organization that runs the opportunity.
